Intendierte Lernergebnisse

ATTENTION: STUDENTS MUST HAVE A PASSING GRADE FOR ENGLISH FOR ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES IN ORDER TO TAKE THIS COURSE

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

- critically analyse an essay in terms of its structure and style

- construct an essay plan

- write various essays implementing the structure and style taught in class

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Group work, workshops, online, extensive self-study, writing assignments in class and written homework assignments.

Students are required to regularly read academic papers in English and discuss them in class in order to develop their academic reading skills and acquire academic vocabulary and register.

Inhalt/e

This course focusses on academic writing and covers the following:

essay structure (introduction, main body and conclusion)
thesis statements
essay planning
essay types
citing and referencing (inclu. quoting, paraphrasing and summarising)
style and features of formal academic writing (inclu. vocabulary, grammar and punctuation)

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

10% Attendance and participation throughout the semester

If students fail to submit work before the deadline, without requesting an extension, then their work will NOT be graded. All work must be uploaded to Moodle.

The overall percentage needed to pass this course is 60%.

ATTENTION: students are required to have completed all of the assessments and received a passing grade on the homework assignments in order to pass this course. If a student’s progress throughout the semester is deemed inadequate, then the student will receive a failing grade overall.

FINAL EXAM: In an ONLINE session on 14 January 2021, students are required to produce at least 2 paragraphs of an academic essay (topic and clear instructions will be provided) within 2 hours.
