Intended learning outcomes
ATTENTION: STUDENTS MUST HAVE A PASSING GRADE FOR ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES IN ORDER TO TAKE THIS COURSE
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- critically analyse an essay in terms of its structure and style
- construct an essay plan
- write a formal argumentative and compare and contrast essay implementing the structure and style taught in class
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Workshops, online tasks, extensive self-study, writing assignments in class and written homework assignments.
Students are required to regularly read academic papers in English in order to develop their academic reading skills and awareness of academic vocabulary and register.
Course content
This course focusses on academic writing and covers the following:
- essay structure (introduction, main body and conclusion)
- thesis statements
- the writing process (including planning and proof reading)
- argumentative essays
- compare and contrast essays
- critiquing skills
- citing and referencing (including quoting, paraphrasing and summarising)
- style and register
- features of formal academic writing (including vocabulary and grammar)
- punctuation
IMPORTANT: due to the ongoing global pandemic, the structure of this course will be adapted as best as possible to meet students’ needs, whilst also complying with the regulations set out by the University. In order to keep students and staff safe, some elements of this course will be online. Therefore, students must have access to a working microphone and camera.

Recommended reading is given throughout the semester. Two particularly useful texts that will be referred to heavily throughout the semester, therefore, students may wish to have their own copies, are:
