Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
· confidently use the English tense system and have a thorough understanding of aspect
· analyse sentences and provide in depth explanations of grammatical features using specific terminology
· actively and accurately use the vocabulary acquired throughout the course
Teaching methodology
Tasks in class and online, extensive self-study, homework activities and final achievement test.
Course content
This course focusses on the development of grammatical accuracy and lexical development and covers the following:
Grammar
- tense and aspect, modal verbs, passive voice, relative clauses and articles.
Lexis
- collocations and idiomatic expressions
- vocabulary development in a broad range of topic areas including the environment, crime and the media.
IMPORTANT: due to the ongoing global pandemic, the structure of this course will be adapted as best as possible to meet students’ needs, whilst also complying with the regulations set out by the University. In order to keep students and staff safe, some elements of this course will be online. Therefore, students must have access to a working microphone and camera.

The following texts are used throughout the course, and students need access to copies of them in order to participate. It is strongly advised that students purchase access to the interactive e-books.
