Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Themen
- Propositionale Logik
- Inferenz in Propositionaler Logik
- Prädikatenlogik erster Stufe
- Inferenz in Prädikatenlogik erster Stufe
Literature

Intended learning outcomes
Students will study different formal logical languages (propositional logic and first-order logic) for knowledge representation, their syntax, semantics and expressivity. Further, students will realize how machines can use these languages for automatic reasoning (e.g. query answering) and get a feeling for the tradeoff between computational complexity and expressivity of these languages. After this course, students should be able to express knowledge in terms of the discussed languages and be able to apply various inference algorithms.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Lecture mixed with practical home and in-class exercises. The teaching language will be German.
Course content
The course covers Propositional Logic and First-order (Predicate) Logic, two basic and popular logical knowledge representation languages that can be employed to implement intelligent applications where the machine is able to automatically answer queries or derive new knowledge based on a given knowledge base.
Topics
- Propositional Logic
- Inference in Propositional Logic
- First-order Predicate Logic
- Inference in First-order Predicate Logic
Literature
The module/class can be followed with the material provided on Moodle.

Theoretische und praktische Themen der LVA.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
60, insgesamt also max. 120 Punkte)
- Prozentsatz der angekreuzten Beispiele multipliziert mit 0.8 (also max. 80 Punkte)
- Mitarbeitspunkte (Bonus)
- Positive Beurteilung nur dann wenn:
- >= 50% der Übungsbeispiele angekreuzt wurden
- 1: >= 175 Punkte
- 2: >= 150 Punkte
- 3: >= 125 Punkte
- 4: >= 100 Punkte
- 5: <= 99 Punkte
Modified examination information (exceptional COVID-19 provisions)
Tests on Moodle (60%), homework exercises via Moodle/BBB (40%), activity marks via Moodle/BBB (Bonus)
Examination methodology
written tests (60%) , homework exercises (40%), activity marks (bonus)
Examination topic(s)
Theoretical and practical topics discussed during the course.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
- Students are graded if their enrolment was accepted at the beginning of term and if they submitted more than 50% of the graded material.
- The grade is composed of the following elements:
- Marks from both tests (max. 60 each, so in total max. 120 marks)
- Percentage of ticked exercises multiplied by 0.8 (so max. 80 marks)
- Activity marks (bonus)
- Pass grade only if:
- >= 50% of exercises were ticked
- >= 30 marks (so half or more) achieved at each test
- Grading key
- 1: >= 175 marks
- 2: >= 150 marks
- 3: >= 125 marks
- 4: >= 100 marks
- 5: <= 99 marks
