Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

This course offers a historical perspective of the romance minority varieties spoken in the Croatian Region of Istria. 

The students will be able to: 

  1. Name and summarize the principal characteristics of the romance minority varieties spoken in Istria
  2. understand how and when are these languages used by the inhabitants of the peninsula
  3. understand which are the consequences and results of the language contact
  4. conduct a bibliographical research. 

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The course will be held online weekly, in regular sessions.

Students will have to:

  1. actively participate in class discussions
  2. read the assigned papers
  3. conduct a bibliographical research on a selected variety
  4. write a final report

The language of instruction will be English, but other languages spoken by the students and listed above can be used.

Course content

The part of the Istrian peninsula that belongs to the Republic of Croatia is characterized both by the presence of two official languages - Croatian and Italian - and by the presence on the territory of other Slavic and Romance varieties. 

This course will focus on the romance varieties Italian, Istrovenetian, Istriot and Istroromanian.  A historical profile of the languages will be given, after which issues related to the particular situation of language contact will be analyzed.
