Course content
The class deals with signal processing for communication systems. Focus is given to the physical layer and the use of signals to model and analyze the full transmission chain. Analog and digital modulation will be explained as well as key algorithms as the optimal receiver and equalization. The student will become familiar not only with communication systems but also will acquire familiarity with deterministic and stochastic signals as well as processing of data which has application in many different fields of information and communication technology.
Prior knowledge expected
- Signal theory (analog and digital signals, filtering, Fourier transform)
- Probability theory and stochastic processes
- Elements of communication engineering (Nachrichtentechnik)
These fundamental concepts will be shortly discussed again at the beginning of the course.
Literature
- Class notes
- Digital Communications (Proakis)
- Digital and analog communication systens (Couch)

Modified examination information (exceptional COVID-19 provisions)
Due to the pandemic emergency, the exam will be done as follows:
- Use of BBB (the link to the room will be sent to the enrolled students). Login has to be done 20 minutes in advance so that a check will be possible to verify proper functioning.
- 30 minutes of written test. The text/questions will be displayed on the BBB window and visible to all participants.
- Participants will have to switch on the webcam and point it towards the desk where they write. Only the pen and some sheets of paper are allowed.
- Once finished (30 minutes from start), a photo has to be taken (using the smart phone) and immediately sent via email to andrea.tonello@aau.at
- There will be a 30 minutes break, to allow correction. Then, each participant will go through the oral part of the exam.
-The oral part of the exam will consist of further questions. The duration will be of up to 30 minutes. Writing will be possible by the shared screen on BBB, or writing on a sheet of paper with the camera pointing towards it.
Examination methodology
- Written test (1.5 hours)
- Oral exam (approx. 15 min)
- Assignments (mandatory) count for 30% of the global grade
Examination topic(s)
Topics of the lectures. Sample of written test will be also provided during the course.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
- Written exam: lecture topics (from 3 to 5 exercises)
- Oral exam: discussion on the written test and related topics
- Assignments: exercises and matlab simulations of the related topics (30% of final grade)
