Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The course is meant to provide the following:

  • the means of conducting studies of end-user satisfaction with interactive applications (like games)
  • inspiration and training for the illustration and presentation of user study results
  • hands-on experience with 3 application examples

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The course alternates between one block of teacher's presentation and one block of students' presentations with interactive discussions.

The teacher's blocks introduce principles and methods for conducting, illustrating and presenting user studies. In the students' blocks, homework that applies these ideas for a given example is presented.

The homework as well as the presentation is conducted by groups of students.

Course content

The course is meant to provide the participants with the means for evaluating end-users' satisfaction with interactive applications.

The evaluation of end-users' perception uses the principles of user studies that are grounded in statistics, but this course avoids the deep mathematical background and goes straight to the application of the resulting methods.

The hands-on examples that are used in homework will be:

  • comparing the video quality of video sequences in an interactive 360-video player in a web browser using the pair comparison method
  • assessing the effect of delay on users' satisfaction with a JavaScript games (cloud games)
  • assessing the effect of the delayed motion of virtual elements in an AR application on a mobile phone

Prior knowledge expected

  • the course assumes a conceptual understanding of the Internet, including general terminology: network layer, transport layer, and protocols such as UDP and TCP
  • ability to modify and deploy JavaScript programs
  • ability to modify and deploy AR-applications on a mobile phone (using ARKit or ARCore)
