SD Teil II & III (4 & 2 ECTS, Sommersemester):

This module course consists of 12 ECTS points (6 ECTS in the winter term, 6 ECTS in the summer term) and will be held for two terms in three courses.
SD Part I (6 ECTS, winter term):
You will keep a study diary with reflexions about the course materials and write an essay developing a research question for the following term.
SD Part II & III (4 & 2 ECTS, summer term):
Start a small research project and develop your answers according to usability in your practical field. In Part III you will develop a sustainability (board)game.
The central topic will be “Sustainability - through Digital Transformation?”. Students can choose themes and questions that are of self-interest and relevance for the understanding of sustainability and sustainable development. The focus must be related to the central topic though.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Innovative Learning: using new and innovative teaching techniques
- Problem Based Learning: learn by scientific discussions about hands-on challenges, focusing on a current topic.
- Experiential Learning: autonomous and peer-work on themes on behalf of practical case studies.
- Reflexions: write and discuss your reflexions on topic related papers and journals.
- Pitches and Speeches
- Transdisciplinary research: work on your research question taking into account partners of practice from industry, economy, administration and the educational establishment.
Course content
If the Internet were a country, it would be the sixth largest consumer of electricity on the planet. On the other hand, the digital transformation results in a large number of positive effects, for example streaming has the potential to save energy and materials in comparison to a shop with physical media. Digitalization can also optimize our physical life and reduce effort and waste. It is, however, of utmost importance to avoid rebound effects by introducing adequate frameworks, measures and evaluations. In the lecture “Sustainability - through Digital Transformation?”, we will take this topic into our own hands to see what measures are useful and what knowledge is required to allow a smooth interplay of technology and society towards a sustainable future.
Another more general part will be the discussion about sustainability as a "wicked problem": The idea of sustainable development is discussed from the point of view of different disciplines. The necessary theories, competencies and methods are taught in order to learn how to design and build our vision of (contribute to the creation of) a future worth living. "Sustainability" is understood as a "regulative idea". Different concepts and methods of several faculties of the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt are included, jointly reflecting about theoretical, methodological and society related aspects and develop them further based on practical fields. The interdisciplinary setting of the students as well as the teaching team is leading to a discourse from different scientific viewpoints and will therefore be a great learning experience. You will develop a concrete idea for a research question and a deeper understanding of sustainability at the end of this course.
