LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The course aims to introduce the ways in which people produce places through social, political, and economic practices, and to reflect how places shape people’s practices and perceptions. It proceeds from the theoretical concepts to the more practical examples, using case-studies from urban milieu. Students practice summarizing key concepts and findings from articles dealing with the topic as well as familiarize themselves with fieldwork and/or discursive research through doing a case-study of urban placemaking of their own choice. By presenting their individual research to class, they demonstrate an understanding of the ways people and places relate to, create, and define each other, and the ability to analyse and synthesize information from fieldwork, media and academic literature.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The course combines lectures and seminars where students discuss selected texts (see literature) and ethnographic films shown in the class. At the end they present case-studies of their own choice. Students are expected to show understanding of basic theoretical approaches to placemaking and are encouraged to use creative tools for analysis and presentation of their individual research.

Inhalt/e

“Imagine yourself suddenly set down . . . alone on a tropical beach close to a native village,” Malinowski addressed readers of his book on Trobriand Islands (1922), pointing out the peculiarities of his research field. However, place was merely the background of his research, a physical framework of the ethnographic description. That approach changed with the awareness that place is also a co-creator of social practices and socio-cultural meanings, today referred to as “the spatial turn”. Through the case-studies of placemaking in urban milieu (e.g. tourism, festivals, sports and recreation, naming and branding of places, neighbourhood renewal, etc.), the course aims to explain relationships between people and their environment. It will draw attention to how people construct the physical, sensory and/or imaginary spaces and make sense of the places they get entangled with. It will provide methodological framework for ethnographic research of placemaking and for understanding ethnography itself as a placemaking practice.
