LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Being able to demonstrate important practices for multivariate statistics in health research, independently structure and conduct an analytic plan for a given dataset, report the findings from data analysis, critically review data analysis reports completed by others.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
Discussion, exercise, computer operations, report writing and reviewing
Inhalt/e
The content of this course includes three parts.
(1) As a way of reviewing previous knowledge, this course will first cover several fundamental quantitative issues including data types, data summaries and presentations, statistical test selection, multiple tests, and other pitfalls often seen in statistical applications in practice.
(2) To provide an overview of some advanced statistical methods used in health research, structural equation modeling (SEM)and linear mixed modeling (LMM) will be introduced. Some emerging technique sconsidering heterogeneity in a sample will also be discussed.
(3) As a course developed for early-stage researchers, presentations/assignments based on students’ own Research interests and statistical analyses are also an important part of this Course.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
Understanding about multivariate statistics (e.g., analysis of variance, regression). Experience with using statistical software such as Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS. General experience in academic English writing.
Literatur
A number of statistical and methodological references will be provided during the course. The following references are recommended generally as they cover a wide range of statistics using different packages (e.g., IBM SPSS, SYSTAT, and SAS):
- Tabachnick,B. G., & Fidell, L. S. (2013). Using multivariate statistics (6thed.). Boston, MA: Pearson Education.
- Pituch, K.A., & Stevens, J. P. (2016). Applied multivariate statistics for thesocial sciences (6th ed.). New York, NY: Routledge
For students who are interested with latent analyses, the Mplus user’s guide is suggested:
- Muthén, L.K., & Muthén, B. O. (1998-2017). Mplus user's guide (8th ed.). Los Angeles,CA: Muthén & Muthén.
