Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

This course aims to provide an entry into the complex, interdisciplinary and exciting field of Gender Studies, with a particular focus on cross-cutting theories and methods. At the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose and development of Gender Studies as a field and its roots in feminist theory and practice;
  • Evaluate different ways of understanding gender and its intersection with other forms of power and identity,
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the core principles of feminist research, and recognize and situate a range of frameworks and methodologies for researching gender;
  • Interrogate a range of key issues and debates around gender in contemporary society.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

This is a lecture-based course. The lecture sessions will involve some lecturer delivery of information but will also incorporate participatory elements, small-group exercises and peer-group presentations in order to enhance student engagement and encourage active learning. You will not be required to prepare material beforehand, but will be given opportunities to read segments of key texts and engage with other sources during the lecture. You will be expected to read more widely for the second piece of written work, once the course has ended. Critical evaluation of course material and readings will be strongly encouraged.

Course content

Gender is pervasive in our social, political and cultural lives and lies at the root of many contentious debates in the contemporary world. Gender studies is an inherently interdisciplinary and politicised field, rooted in feminist struggle, that offers us a range of critical lenses or tools to expose and evaluate gender dynamics, with the ultimate aim of contesting or transforming them altogether. This course will survey diverse concepts of and approaches to gender and its intersection with other axes of power and identity. It will explore how gender studies scholars conduct research and justify their knowledge claims, and it will critically investigate gendered power and politics in a range of areas and topics. Throughout, we will emphasise the connection between the emergence and dynamics of the field to struggles for social change. We will end by evaluating the contemporary backlash against Gender Studies in many countries.

The course is taught in two blocks, over two separate weeks, and the topics are likely to be as follows, with some possible refinements nearer the time of delivery:

First block: history, theory, concepts:

1. Introduction: what is gender studies? What is its connection to feminism?

2. Feminists rethink gender: identity, role, power and performance

3. Aint I a Woman? Gender and intersectionality, racism and empire

4. Gender is not a synonym for women: Men and masculinities

5. Disrupting the binary: Gender, sexuality and queer theory

Second block: research, methods, cases:

6. Rethinking knowledge production: from objectivity to situated knowledge/s

7. Feminist strategies for researching gender: visual media, textual analysis, interviews

8. Case studies: gender, violence and conflict

9. Case studies: gender, politics and protest

10. Co-optation or backlash? Challenges to feminism and to Gender studies

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

In order to foster ongoing engagement and active learning, formal assessment for this class will include:

  • One learning journal: this will be submitted online within a week of the end of the first block. The learning journal entries will together comprise a total of 1500 words, reflecting on the insights learned from each of the five lectures in the block. You will be provided with guiding questions for the learning journal.
  • One desk research project: this will be submitted online by the end of July, and will be around 2500 words long. You will choose one of the gender case study topics covered in the second lecture block, and seek to answer a set of guiding questions for the topic by drawing on 5-8 academic sources from the syllabus that cover relevant theoretical, methodological and case study material. You will seek to identify contemporary examples of the particular issue by doing your own research online, and you will reflect on possible avenues for further research on the topic. Again, clear guidance will be provided.

Examination topic(s)

The topics assessed in the coursework will be drawn from those described in the course overview.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

The final grade will be made up of a mark for learning journal (35%) and desk research project (65%). The grading scheme will comply with the usual grading scheme for degree programmes at the University.
