LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

During this class, we will seek to:

  • Improve the student’s critical thinking skills.
  • Provide the student with the tools necessary to become aware of the moral dimensions involved in almost all business decisions.
  • Learn how to take other parties’ perspectives, in order to be better equipped to resolve moral issues.
  • Learn about the widely recognized moral philosophies used in reasoning about moral dilemmas.
  • Learn about the components that are required for moral behavior.
  • Explore current ethical issues facing management in businesses.

Inhalt/e

This course will explore the bases of moral and ethical behavior in business. After gaining a basic understanding of various moral theories, we will examine the roles of reason and emotion in making moral judgments, the various components of moral behavior, and the roles business plays in society. We will spend a great deal of time and effort on critical thinking skills and developing the ability to view any given situation from a variety of perspectives. The student will be asked to explore and critically evaluate his/her personal value system, with a focus on preparation for facing the ethical dilemmas that constantly occur in business settings.

We will push further to explore how moral and ethical behavior differs around the world, with an understanding of similarities and differences between universal norms and local norms, as well as corruption and its various forms. Given the lack of “correct” answers regarding moral behavior, we will focus much more on problem identification and the reasoning process.

III. REQUIRED TEXTS

All assigned readings will be available on Moodle.

The majority of class time will be spent in (group) discussion about the reading materials. To get the most benefit out of this time, it is imperative that all students read the material prior to coming to class. When reading the material you should focus on the “big picture” being presented. I will not be trying to see if you remember all of the details presented, but will be focusing on questions that are raised in your mind while reading, and on applying the concepts presented to real-life situations.

To aid in the process of reading and understanding the assigned material, I will provide some questions for you to think about as your read each of the assignments. You should read the questions before you begin reading the assignments, so that, as you read the material, you will be able to focus on what it has to say regarding those topics. As you read the assignments, you should be actively engaged with the text—write comments in the margins. Note things that don’t make sense to you. Ask questions. Relate the readings to other classes, other assignments, things you know or believe. The point of the readings is not to provide material for me to test you on—the point is for you to think about what the writer is saying, critique her or his arguments, and decide for yourself whether you “buy” the ideas or not. To do this requires activity on your part, not just a passive reading of the material.
