Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

To know about applications of statistics and to know about the possibilitiesof misinterpretations of such applications. To understand the basics conceptsin order to be able to apply statistical methods.

To use tools for statistical computations and for generating statisticaldiagrams; especially to use EXCEL for this purpose.

To be able to read and understand statistical reports, to recognisestatistical problems in one's one discipline and be able to communicate theseproblems appropriately with statisticians and understand their solutions.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Students have to work on 5 problems each week on their own or in teams .

From those problems that they select (and "cross" in ZEUS), they have to be able to explain the solution without any support material on the blackboard.

Additionally to the exercises, there will be a tutoring course (led by a student tutor) where students may ask questions and discuss learning problems.

Course content

Basic methods of probability theory and statistics. To collect data, calculate statistical figures and draw diagrams from it and interpret these figures and diagrams in the context of the data. To judge data by probability models.

  • The steps in the process of a statistical investigation
  • Excel - Basics and the use of templated
  • One-dimensional frequency distributions
  • Statistical figures for one-dimensional distributions
  • Two-dimensional descriptive statistics
  • Regression analysis
  • Probability theory
  • Discrete probability distributions
  • Continuous probability distributions
  • The ideas behind statistical inference
  • Statistical tests and confidence intervals for standard problems

Prior knowledge expected

Knowledge and skills in calculus at Matural level are required, basic skills in EXCEL are helpful.

Literature

There is a joint Moodle for the exercises and the course.

On the Moodle platform there will be additional material to the lecture, the slides of the lecture, solutions to exercises, etc.

For key methods templates in Excel will be provided in order to facilitate the calculation of statistical figures and the drawing of diagrams.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Presenting tasks that the students have prepared on the blackboard

Presentation without any support material, occasionally with the help of the laptop.

Explanation of the presented solution, coordination of the calculations with the concepts presented in the course. Interpretation of the solution in the context of the task.

Weekly, 5 tasks are posed, which are to be solved before the exercise class.

Two exam sessions

Tasks similar to the weekly posed tasks. Work on the tasks may be supported by material of the students and the use of the laptop of the student.

Examination topic(s)

Solving the posed tasks with the methods that are presented in the course.

Use the templates in Excel that are provided by the course leader.

Dates of mid-term (by mid November) and final exam (mid January) will be announced.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

The final grading combines student achievement in

  1. Mid-term exam (at least 50%)
  2. Final exam (at least 50%)
  3. Work in class weekly (be present, cross at least 50% of the tasks, be able to present the solution without the help of additional material).

For positive grading, all parts have to be met.
