Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

To know about applications of statistics and to know about the possibilities of misinterpretations of such applications. To understand the basics concepts in order to be able to apply statistical methods.

To use tools for statistical computations and for generating statistical diagrams; especially to use EXCEL for this purpose.

To be able to read and understand statistical reports, to recognise statistical problems in one's one discipline and be able to communicate these problems appropriately with statisticians and understand their solutions.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Blended Learning: Lecture and self-study from materials that will be made accessible. There will also be an exercises class (compulsory)  and a tutoring class (optional, led by a student tutor).

Course content

Basic methods of probability theory and statistics. To collect data, calculate statistical figures and draw diagrams from it and interpret these figures and diagrams in the context of the data. To judge data by probability models.

  • The steps in the process of a statistical investigation
  • Excel - Basics and the use of templated
  • One-dimensional frequency distributions
  • Statistical figures for one-dimensional distributions
  • Two-dimensional descriptive statistics
  • Regression analysis
  • Probability theory
  • Discrete probability distributions
  • Continuous probability distributions
  • The ideas behind statistical inference
  • Statistical tests and confidence intervals for standard problems

Prior knowledge expected

Knowledge and skills in calculus at the level of Matura, basic skillls in Excel are helpful

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Written exam with two separate parts:

  1. A practical part ( 2 times 45 min) - course material, textbook and laptop are permitted
  2. A theoretical part (45 min) - no materials allowed

Examination topic(s)

In the practical part

are posed that  are similar (but more general) to those, which have been treated in the exercises. Students are allowed to use their materials they have prepared during the semester.

In the theoretical part

the students are asked to write a short essay with an overview on specific concepts or methods. No materials are admitted in this part of the exam.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

  • In the practical part 66 points are the maximum,
  • in the theoretical part 34 points are the maximum.

For a positive grading, a student has to attain more than 50% of the max points in each part of the exam.
