Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- understand important societal, cultural, and environmental issues and their relation to markets
- critically evaluate the role of business, markets, and consumption in society
- foster analytical knowledge in relation to the central topics
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
The principle aim of this course is to provide students with some sound knowledge and critical understanding of the relationships between markets and their context to business, consumption, and society. The course is a reading course which means that all participants are expected to read given literature from unit to unit, and to provide presentations or introductions reciprocally. Course participants will work and discuss in a workshop atmosphere in order to strengthen common knowledge and reading experience.
Course content
Markets are a central category in economics, sociology, history and further disciplines but the knowledge about markets is limited. Very often the term is used as a black box where markets are just treated as a place of exchange equalizing offer and demand. Also, markets are taken metaphorically (e.g. markets for ideas, markets for careers or marriages) without having a clear command of related principles being at work.
Literature
The course will start reading the book:
Geoffrey Hodgson (2015). Conceptualizing Capitalism. Institutions, Evolution, Future,
Chicago + London: Chicago University Press, Part 1, Chapters 1-10
However, further pieces of literature (book chapters and/or journal articles) are possible depending on interests and previous research by participants. Links to more genuine market research as well as links to titles being more explicit in entrepreneurship or/and consumption research are possible and welcome. This reading course is part of a series of previous and further studies of reading discovery.
