Titel: Relief in Interpersonal Behavior: The Role of Mentalization in Inpatients with Mental Disorders
Beschreibung:

Aim

In the present study, we investigated the role of mentalization in the reduction of interpersonal problems over the course of inpatient treatment and at follow up.

Methods

Patients were recruited in two medical centers. Both clinics use different therapeutic approaches that do not focus on specific psychotherapy concepts. Data was assessed at the beginning of inpatient treatment (T0), at the discharge from hospital (T1), and after about six months posttreatment (T2).

Results

Of the 89 patients who participated in the study, 73 finished data assessment at follow up. Univariate ANOVA revealed that the treatment institution had almost no effect on the variables. Patterns of correlation between the included variables remained stable over the course of treatment. Repeated measures ANOVAs indicate that the ability to mentalize increased significantly over the course of treatment and at follow up [F(1.651, 92.446) = 11.182, p < .001, part. η2 = .166], while interpersonal problems [F(1.821, 109.268) = 5.635, p < .01, part. η2 = .086], and symptom severity [F(2, 112) = 21.690, p < .001, part. η2 = .279] decreased significantly. Multiple linear regression models revealed that improvements in mentalization significantly predicted reductions in interpersonal problems at each point in time.

Discussion

Although not following specific psychotherapy concepts, treatment approaches at both medical centers improved patients’ scores of mentalization, interpersonal problems and symptom severity. Improvements in mentalization turned out to be significant predictors of reductions in interpersonal problems.
