This research project addresses the identity formation process of young people, for whom this process may prove a particular challenge. Though the study does not restrict itself to this aspect, these particular adolescents are very specifically situated in terms of their life-worlds, as they are: of Bosnian origin, thus they feature a so-called “migration background”, of Muslim faith, which means they do not match the country’s traditional “pattern of religion”, and, what is more, they live in regions which have always exhibited autochthonous and/or allochthonous minorities, which can add further complexity to discursively co-determined identity formation processes. Furthermore, alongside the religious-denominational aspects, the study also aims to incorporate further individual and life-world aspects –including factors that may prove relevant for identity: value conceptions, socio-economic circumstances, access to education, and social participation. The research question is guided by the assumption that the particular situation of the selected cases studied exerts a significant influence on the process of identity formation.
