Titel: Designing a Global Virtual Campus Environment
Beschreibung:

In the rapidly evolving digital age, the concept of global connectivity has transcended traditional boundaries, allowing for international interaction and collaboration. This talk by Felix Schniz and Tom Tucek delves into the principles and theoretical background behind the Global Virtual Campus Online project. This initiative seeks to create a game-like digital platform developed by students from the Game Studies and Engineering programme at the University of Klagenfurt. It offers a unique space where individuals worldwide can converge, engage, and showcase their work.

Central to this project is its potential to be a significant outlet for research and community building. Drawing parallels with existing virtual spaces, the Global Virtual Campus aims to cultivate a sense of belonging and continuous engagement among its users. Critical considerations in its design include creating a diverse and inclusive virtual environment, reflecting various identities and cultural backgrounds, and appealing to a broad spectrum of users.

Despite its roots in video game designs, the Global Virtual Campus Online does not use gamified systems, such as experience points or accumulation of in-game wealth. This decision stems from an understanding that the motivational dynamics in a work-oriented environment differ from those in gaming contexts. Research suggests that disguising work as gameplay can provoke adverse reactions from users. The presentation will also offer insights into the project's progress, demonstrating its features, addressing challenges encountered, and outlining future developmental milestones.
