Titel: Mothers and fathers with ID in Austria: A multi-perspective doctoral dissertation

The poster outlines research questions, design, preliminary findings and conclusions of a doctoral dissertation in the field of social pedagogy and inclusion. Research is still in progress with a duration from 2017 to 2020. The overall research question investigates the meaning of intellectual disabilities for parenting in Austria.

Aim

To locate resources and barriers for parenting by people with ID, primarily focusing on parents’ perspectives, supplemented by societal discourse and insights from people supporting parents with ID.

Method

Discourse analysis is applied to internet comments whilst interpretative phenomenological analysis is used to approach interviews with parents with ID and interviews with people supporting them. In the end, subjectification analysis explores connections between discourse and subjectification processes of parents with ID in a collaborative setting.

Results

Preliminary findings will be presented on the poster, drawing from empirics of the earlier stages of the dissertation.

Conclusions

 Emerging conclusions and their relevance for science and practice will be discussed in context of current results
