Title: On the Genealogy of the Idea of Postmigration: From Utopias to Transtopias
Description:

In recent years, the term “postmigration”, which literally means “after migration”, has increasingly appeared in the German-speaking world. Various aspects or perspectives can be found under this term, which seem to be condensed into an overall discourse. Analogous to postcolonial, decolonial or subaltern studies, we speak here of postmigration studies. A radically critical attitude towards dominant ethno-national interpretations and the historiography that goes with them is the hallmark of postmigrant studies. The postmigrant reading, which emerged from the critique of established methodological migrantism (Erol Yildiz), goes beyond the rehearsed dichotomies of “Us/Them”, initiates an epistemological turn, enables new ways of thinking, opens up new research perspectives and designs a different genealogy of the present. In this lecture, we will first show from a historical perspective how the idea of the postmigrant emerged, which aspects have been discussed recently and where the future discussion will go. What does it mean to think of societies in terms of postmigrantism? What are the methodological and socio-political consequences for future migration research in Europe? Finally, we will introduce the term “transtopia” as a kind of realised utopia and link it to postmigration practices and forms of articulation.
