Abstract: | Sobering results counter the long tradition of transformative pedagogical approaches. Changing the world through education alone has not yet succeeded. Against this background, the chapter analyses human perception and its effects on how we deal with others and the world. Starting from the theoretic foundations of Hegel's philosophy and Freud's psychoanalysis, the article focuses on dichotomous constructs of difference that, with their seductive power, make more subtle perceptions of difference difficult and reduce the complexity of reality. A consequence is the dominant division between Us and Them at the level of belonging, which underlies various social divisions. Central to this chapter are the national orders that shape most states in the Global North and pose a fundamental dilemma for Global Citizenship. How are the global existential problems and global injustices to be dealt with if empathy and solidarity end at one's national borders? As a possible, albeit not an easy way, the chapter proposes the phenomenological approach, which understands learning as experience and opens sensual access to others, things, and the world. Global Citizenship education thus requires new experiential spaces of learning in which learners can relate to the world's challenges beyond the usual national orders and develop a "global empathy." |
