As the chairs of the first ACM Workshop on Green Multimedia Systems (GMSys), we are pleased to welcome you to this event, co-located with ACM MMSys 2023.

Climate change necessitates drastically reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including reducing energy consumption in digital technologies. Video streaming contributes more than half of digital technology's global impact, and its consumption is increasing due to the growth in video data volume, the rise in video resolutions, and accessibility through mobile devices and high-speed Internet. Video data processes from encoding to decoding and display require a significant amount of electricity. Therefore, exploring methods for greener video encoding, transmission, and decoding is crucial while maintaining a high Quality of Experience (QoE).

For the first edition of ACM GMSys, we received 12 submissions that have been rigorously peer-reviewed by an international technical program committee. Eight papers have been accepted, resulting in an acceptance rate of 66.7%. The papers appearing in the program of ACM GMSys cover a variety of topics, including (i) green video distributions and optimizations from an end-to-end perspective, (ii) energy efficient improvements and video complexity analysis for video encoding, (iii) energy reduction for video decoding, (iv) video encoding scheduling for edge/cloud instances, and (v) audience aware streaming as well as DASH manifest optimizations.
