Leadership, Safety, and Health in the Austrian Construction Industry
Beschreibung: Statistical data have consistently shown that despite continuing efforts to reduce the number of accidents in the workforce, there were many workplace fatalities and disabling workplace injuries in Austria in 2009 and 2010. A comparison of the work-related accidents in Austria by the sector of the economy shows that work-related accidents occur most frequently in the construction industry, more specifically in mining and building trade (Statistics Austria, 2009). These accidents lead to dramatic consequences for the aggrieved party and produces direct and indirect costs for the organization. From the financial perspective, work accidents cost the Austrian economy Millions of Euros (only estimations available), in addition to human suffering and loss of life. Few industries are plagued by more workplace injuries than the construction industry, which possesses the third-highest death rate when compared to other occupations (Goldenhar, Moran, & Colligan, 2001). In the U.S., 1,220 construction workers were killed in the year 2000 and 470,000 were injured (National Safety Council, 2002). Bureau of Labor Statistics (2002) further showed that there were 481,400 nonfatal injuries and illnesses in the construction industry in 2001, and these injuries were primarily caused by back pain, multiple body injuries, knee strain, and upper arm strain (Courtney, Matz, & Webster, 2002). The above data suggest that construction safety records have only made positive strides slowly over the past decade, even though hazardous work conditions and unsafe equipment have been significantly improved during the past decade.
