| Beschreibung: | Strategic objectives addressed: 1. To substantially enhance the state of the art in the area of higher education and graduate employment in Europe. 2. To provide a balanced analysis of the role played by different specific and generic competences in different phases of higher education graduates'''' work and career. 3. To provide an empirically based analysis of the adequacy of higher education policies in Europe. 4. To provide indicators for international benchmarking. 5. To strengthen cooperation and infrastructure for international and multidisciplinary comparative research in the area of higher education and graduate employment. 6. To develop standards for research instruments which can be used in the future. Abstract: As Europe and the rest of the world moves towards a knowledge society, an effective system of higher education is increasingly important to the economy and society. However, ambiguity as to the meaning of the knowledge society is reflected in tensions in demands made of higher education graduates who are expected to fulfil key positions in the knowledge society. These workers need to possess the advanced specialized knowledge and skills required of modern high-level professionals, but are also often expected to be highly flexible and adaptable, able and willing to take up challenges not closely related to the specific field in which they have been trained. The knowledge society appears to require a new kind of worker: the flexible professional. In this project we focus on three broad and interrelated questions: (1) which competencies are required by higher education graduates in order to function adequately in the knowledge society? (2) what role is played by higher education institutions in helping graduates to develop these competencies? (3) what tensions arise as graduates, higher education institutions, employers and other key players each strive to meet their own objectives, and how can these tensions be resolved? This project will develop a series of instruments designed to provide the information required to answer these questions. These instruments are: (1) a country study highlighting the main structural and institutional factors that shape the relation between higher education and work in nine European countries; (2) a qualitative study on graduate competences in the knowledge society; (3) a survey of higher education graduates in these countries. The results of the project will be disseminated in the form of several reports and memoranda, a working paper series, seminars and conferences among a broad public of scientists, policy makers and other stakeholders. |

| Beschreibung: | Das Projekt untersucht die aktuellen Entwicklungen der Beziehungen zwischen wissenschaftlichem Studium und Erwerbsleben in Europa. Ein Hochschulstudium wird vor dem Hintergrund der Herausforderungen einer "Wissensgesellschaft" als immer wichtiger angesehen. Von Absolvent/inn/en wird erwartet, dass sie über spezialisiertes Fachwissen verfügen, aber auch flexibel und anpassungsfähig sind, fähig und willens, sich Herausforderungen zu stellen, auf die sie durch ihr Studium nicht unmittelbar vorbeitet werden. Eine wissenbasierte Gesellschaft scheint einen neuen Typ von professionellem Arbeitsvermögen zu verlangen: flexible Graduierte. Das (nach dem englischsprachigen Akronym so genannte) REFLEX-Projekt konzentriert sich auf drei miteinander verknüpfte Fragen: (1) Welche Kompetenzen werden benötigt, um berufliche Aufgaben in einer wissensbasierten Gesellschaft angemessen zu erfüllen? (2) Welche Rolle spielt ein Studium bei der Entwicklung dieser Kompetenzen? (3) Wie sieht die Arbeitssituation für Hochschulabsolvent/inn/en aus und welche Perspektiven haben sie? Das Projekt wird als "Specific Targeted Research Projekt (STREP)" des 6. Rahmenprogramms der EU finanziert. Im Mittelpunkt der Studie steht eine schriftliche Befragung von ca. 30.000 Hochschulabsolvent/inn/en in insgesamt 11 Ländern. Zentrale Themen: - Beschäftigungssituation von Graduierten im transnationalen Vergleich; - Übergang in eine erste Beschäftigung nach Studienabschluss; - Beschäftigungssituation fünf Jahre nach Studienabschluss; - Qualifikation und Tätigkeit, Berufserfolg; - neue berufliche Anforderungen; - Zusammenhang von Studium und Beruf, Berufszufriedenheit; - Wirkungen von Studienangeboten und -bedingungen für Qualifikationsverwendung und beruflichen Erfolg; - retrospektive Bewertung des Studiums. vgl.: www.uni-klu.ac.at/reflex |
